Too Much Caffeine

Let’s talk about Caffeine.

Weird topic, right? But stay with me.

I used to drink caffeine quite regularly. A cup of coffee in the morning, tea throughout the afternoon.

It took me far too long, however, to realize that caffeine can really affect anxiety. For me in particular, I’m very sensitive to caffeine. It makes me shaky, dizzy, unfocused, and anxious.

So, I thought, just cut out the coffee, switch to decaf. Easy enough, right?

But then, I would still have several cups of tea a day because I’m not big on plain water, and I was confused about why I was feeling all my caffeine symptoms when all I was drinking each day was tea.

Only after doing a bit of research did I find out what was wrong.

You’d be surprised about how much caffeine is in a lot of your staple teas. Black tea, for example, including your English Breakfast, Earl Grey, etc., has around 25-48mg of caffeine. Even green tea has around 25mg. That’s compared to a little over 100mg in an average cup of coffee. Drink 3 or 4 cups a day, and you may as well have had the coffee in the morning.

After finding this out, I decided to cut out caffeine from my tea as well. I still drink “herbal” teas, or tisanes, and decaf black teas.

For the benefit of anyone who’d like to try giving up caffeine, I’ve included below a few of my favorite non-caffeinated teas.

Twining’s Orange and Cinnamon Spice: This is once of my favorites because it tastes like CHRISTMAS! It’s a very sweet tea, and the smell is intoxicating. I drink it all year long when I need a little bit of Christmas cheer.

Harney & Sons African Autumn: My friend actually introduced me to this tea. It has a rooibos base with lots of lovely spices. It makes me feel warm and cozy every time I drink it.

Twining’s Decaf English Breakfast: I was ecstatic when I found out that Twining’s does decaf versions of my favorite teas. I love my staples, and it’s nice that I don’t really have to give them up. They also make a decaf Earl Grey and Irish Breakfast that I like.
